Front Cover

this is my final front cover. i think i did a better job on this one than the other because of the practice i had with the first. this one seems to be more proffessional.

Sketch

This is a sketch i did to show what my front cover may eventually look like.
There is much more that i would like to do on it but i can only do these things using a computer programe such as Adobe Photoshop.

Questionnaire results.

These are graphs which show the results of my questionnaire. i will base my magazine around these results.

Different Fontz for magazine

this list is from many which i have narrowed down to these few.
i have found many different fonts which i could use for my magazine. i tried to find ones which will fit my magazines style of music; Blues/Jazz/Soul. these are from the website 'dafont.com'

This is my first choice of font. I like this because it reminds me of the older fonts used on jazz/blues clubs. this is my favourite of the different fonts.

This is another one of my favourites. this reminds me more of a magazine type font...

this font represents the place where the music comes from which is why i chose thisas a maybefont.

i love this font because of the retro-style. i think it would suit the style of my magazine.

Magazine Cover Analysis

this is the analysis of the Uncut Front Cover in a different format.

Evaluation of Fornt Cover/Contents Page

this is the evaluation of my Front Cover and Contents Page:

Evaluation of Front Cover and Contents Page

I chose to design my contents page as if it were from a different issue from my front cover. I did this because I had better ideas when I did the contents page and with a better font more related to a magazine. I think I should’ve used this specific font for my front cover as it would make it more professional. On my front cover I liked the row of pictures along the bottom. I think this gives a great effect and adds to the professionalism of the cover. However I don’t like the barcode sitting on top of these three images. I would have rather had it underneath but couldn’t fit it there due to flattening the image which meant I couldn’t move it. The ‘explosion’ cut-out in the corner which bears ‘Now Only 35p’, makes the front cover seem more like it’s a fun and interesting magazine to read. I also made this because it stands out above the rest of the image and stands out to potential readers that could buy it. I made a column inch using the same technique as the title. As you can see the last piece of information’s black outline is much more bold and prominent than the other two. It annoyed me when it did this because I think it ruins the balance of the text on the cover as the others were thin and neat. Inside this text I changed the colour of the dots of these letters/symbol ‘i’, ‘j’ and ‘!’. This was done to make the text seem more appealing to the readers and to help the writing stand out. For the main image I feel I could’ve chosen a better, more sharpened image and I should’ve not edited it as I did. I believe that the colours on it are too vibrant and intense for the particular subject.
I decided to do my contents page differently to the front cover. I made this decision because when I did the contents page I had come up with better ways on how I would create it. For example I think that the text (both font and colour) is better suited for a magazine as it looks more like text a real magazine would use. There were some issues I had with it though. These were the picture of Sam Nixey at the bottom of the page. I don’t like that it has prominent edges. I aimed to make it fade gradually into the background but it didn’t work. However I think that the image of James Davis in the top right corner suits the page nicely. This is because it merges into the background and become one. I like the choice of font I used on this page because it seems more the type of font you would find in a magazine contents page. I believe that this particular font is what I should’ve used for the text on the front cover. The two colours I chose to use complimented each other along with the soft gradual change between the two.
Overall I feel I did better for image use on my front cover and for professionalism I believe I did better on my contents page. There are things on each i could’ve improved on and i have stated them in this evaluation.

Mock Contents Page

this is the contents page i made for our mock school magazine. it is a different design to the front cover becuase i found the different font which looked more professional than the original. i also liked the blue and grey colour scheme more. i belive it suits the magazine more. this was also done to maybe shown as a different issue of the magazine.

Mock Front Cover

this is my practice front cover. it took me two/three weeks to complete. i think the front cover suits the style of magazine it was made for.

Uncut Magazine

this is an evaluation of a magazine front cover. the issue i chose to use was one from the magazine 'Uncut'. this particular issue had an image of Stevie Wonder.

Uncut Magazine

The Magazine I am going to analyse in this essay is called ‘Uncut Magazine’. It is a popular large, mainstream national magazine of which new issues are out every month. The musical interest attracts fans of a rock, indie and funk music. The magazine also has news about the latest films to hit the silver screen and DVD releases. It contains a broad range of music reviews and interviews with different bands from Bob Dylan and Steve wonder to Led Zeppelin and The Feeling. The particular issue I’m analysing is one with Stevie Wonder on the front cover. The image of him in blue stands out against the red background which really contrasts and makes it more eye-catching.
Although the contents of the magazine i.e. from Bob Dylan to The Feeling, would appeal to all age groups. This is not apparent from the glance of the front cover. The producer is appealing to the different ages by using so many different genres of music from different periods. This magazine would certainly stand out to the casual shopper, with the predominant, bleeding image and name of Stevie Wonder would lead you to believe it was a Motown magazine. The bleeding image and the stars in the background are a way of showing Wonders success, like it is too big to fit on the cover. These readers would also be attracted by the callout ‘World Exclusive’ which would make the fans of Wonder intrigued to read into it. Especially with the caption underneath ‘Motown genius breaks 10 year silence’. Another way the producer sells the product is by adding a hook which is the free CD giveaway. The buyers would assume that it is a Stevie Wonder CD as he is on the front cover to make them buy it even though it doesn’t say what it contains. As the picture of Wonder is him smiling it gives off a happy feeling out to the reader. This particular picture could also be to show that the music he makes is happy. As the music of Motown was predominantly written, sung and produced by black people, but bought and enjoyed buy all race and creed. So this magazine appeals to everyone.
For the younger reader they have got a list of different artists which younger people seem to enjoy more and relate to instead of some of the older artists given. For the particular magazine I’ve chosen it would be Stevie Wonder. They have also got in the corner a line which says ‘300 music & movie reviews’. The producers have done this to show that they have plenty of information so everyone can read it and get something they want out of it. At the top of the cover they have put a banner with some spillers of the contents of the magazine so potential buyers can see what the particular issue contains and decide whether to but it or not. The information they choose would have to be something big, important and interesting to grab the reader’s attention and make them want to read into it. These could be called cutlines or a callout.
Although I could not find a contents page for this magazine, I think that it would be packed full of page references to the different stories. This would intrigue people even more.

Another Image.

this is another image i could use if i were doing a rock magazine. i like this image because it has an element of a raw-edge fell towards it.

i will decide which type of magazine i will do after i have completed my questionnaire and analysed the results.

Photo...

At the moment i am in the duration of taking many photographs which will maybe end up on my final piece. i have already taken a few different ones for testing.

this is an image i would use if i were doing a rock magazine. this is because the image portrays attitude.

Starting off

started by writing an essay about a magazine article:

Magazine Article

The article I have chosen to write about is an article in the music magazine “Mojo”. The article is an interview with the creator of Motown, the ‘Emperor of Soul’, Berry Gordy. This article was written by Geoff Brown.
The magazine Mojo is a large, national magazine which is released monthly owned by the German company ‘Bauer’. The company Bauer also own a radio station. The magazine publishers were inspired by the publishers Emap who published the magazine ‘Q’ which was very successful. Mojo was first released in 1993, keeping with the Classic rock style of ‘Q’. The competitors of this magazine are other music magazines. For example magazines like ‘Q’ and ‘Classic Rock’. There is a range in different ages who would read this magazine. For example middle aged people would read it because of the genre of music which is being shown in the magazine; classic rock and younger teenage people will like it because it contains articles about the more modern groups and artists too. This issue is especially aimed at more the older generation because it has a 39 page section about the 50 year anniversary of Motown. It also comes with a free Motown hits CD which has been made to look like an old 45 RPM vinyl record to give it an authentic feel. There are many old blue note images of the many Motown groups and artists.
The format of this article is a hybrid article. It contains elements of an interview (talking to Berry Gordy), personal sketch (saying about his achievement of Motown) and a confession/ personal experience (stating the problems he faced in Motown and how he overcame them). Throughout the article, Gordy talks about different Motown artists and problems he faced during the creation of the Motown label. Before the article begins there is a bold headline at the top of the article which describes what he did. This is done to introduce him as an ‘Emperor’ or a music group/artist who are just about to come on stage. There are many different quotes from the article being shown in boxes and bold writing placed around. This is done to get the reader/browser to be intrigued by the story and want to read more into it. The first one of these says “When I saw the cars coming off the ford assembly line, I got an idea. Why don’t I have a record company with an assembly line?” Quotes like this one are little bits of information that the potential buyer won’t necessarily know. The first line of the article says ‘Before Motown there was never anything like it’; this line shows how important Motown was n the history of music and how much of an influence it has on modern music. It is also used to make Gordy seem just like his nickname; an Emperor. After talking about some of the artists of Motown, Geoff Brown then goes on to talk about What Gordy did before he created Motown. The words and phrases Brown uses throughout the whole four page article are used to show Berry Gordy as being a powerful force which blew both the music industry and peoples taste in music to another level. Brown is showing what Berry Gordy has done for the world of music and how a black person could do that to music; especially as it was created in the 1960’s when many Americans were very racist. It is a very positive article which is important because it is done to show the 50th anniversary of the Motown label. The article might not have been done just because of this, but also to promote the Motown label for the younger generation who read the magazine. This label was very important for black people trying to get into the mainstream music scene as it is completely different to groups like The Beetles or The Who which were dominating music at the time. The colour of both the images and some of the text relates to the time period. The header of the article is in a bold, gold font. This is done because of his nickname and gold is normally shown as a royal, expensive colour and material. The images are black and white because it was the ‘60’s and because it makes the images stand out above the rest of the page. For example there is an A4 image of Berry Gordy on the first page and it doesn’t just stand out because it’s big; the black and white is very striking to the eye. Throughout the rest of the article there are images of Gordy next to ‘Hitsville U.S.A’ (the recording studios of Motown), recording artists and many vinyl records to show that it’s the 1960’s. The majority of the images are showing joyful people to show that Motown hit the world like a storm. There are very few images that ‘bleed’ off the page. These images are of the most well known artists and producers of Motown. For example the A4 image of Berry Gordy is a bleeding image. This may have been done to show his importance in the Motown label and that this importance could not be contained.
